Paul Gascoigne played for Tottenham Hotspur 1988-91, Lazio, Italy 1992-95, and then joined Glasgow Rangers. At the 1990 World Cup semifinal against West Germany, he committed a foul for which he was booked (cautioned by the referee), meaning that he would be unable to play in the final, should England win. His tearful response drew public sympathy, and he was subsequently lionized by the British press.
